German U-Boat on show at the Quayside

Postby paje »

During WWII a German U-Boat was captured intact. It was refurbished in Scotland by the Royal Navy and exhibited for morale boosting purposes at various ports on its way to London and the Thames.

I was a schoolboy at the time it came up the Tyne to Newcastle and was able to walk through it and see what it was like inside.

Is there anyone around in their mid seventies or older who did the same. If so do they remember the year and date when it happened? I would like to know so I can look at the local newspapers at the national newspaper library in Colindale London.

I have a Pathe News clip of the U-Boat travelling up the Thames to Westminster but not the visit to the Tyne.

The only 'u' boat story which I have is about the 2 or 3 which sat under the King Edward on the Gateshead side down from the railway sheds in the early 60's. They were eventually scrapped. Arfur.

I see it's almost 2 years since I posted about my going aboard the captured German U-Boat in World War II.
I can't be the only person left who remembers it. Of course if the date was 1940-42 then I would be eleven and people older than me would getting thin on the ground now.
When I was young I used to literally roll over and over on the floor, marveling at the intricacies of my mind that produced these gems of verbal wit. Now I am old I am not so supple.

Hi paje ,

I can remember my Dad taking me to see a submarine moored at the Quayside when I was about 8 years old so that would be in 1956.

It`s highly unlikely to be your U-Boat though at that date.
